The awkwardly named Terminator: Genisys might have found some support in Chinese film markets – but the wider reaction to the movie was less forgiving. With news that the planned sequel has been put on ice permanently, Jai Courtney has come out and admitted that the future of the franchise is very much unknown at the present time.

Courtney, on promotional tour with Suicide Squad, let slip that he thinks the franchise is currently down and unlikely to get back up – telling Business Insider;

“I’ve certainly become unattached to the idea of it having to come around again.”

“If it seems like an obvious movie to make then cool… But with Terminator, who knows, it’s probably time to leave it where it is. But if they can get back in there and dig around and decide there is another film to make, I’ll take the call.”

Genysis managed to clock in $400 million in the global audience – most of which came from the foreign markets. Domestically the film bombed hard; many labelling the flick a franchise killer.

Paramount originally had a sequel lined up and even slated it for a 2018 release – but the negative reaction caused the studio to knock it off the slate. Director Alan Taylor has gone back to work on Game on Thrones – and no new rumours have been swirling round about a new film. While most of the films stars are signed on for three films; the option to use those hasn’t been executed by Paramount who could force through another film if it wanted.

Interestingly the Terminator film rights will revert back to Cameron in three years. He’s currently busy with his bank of Avatar sequels – meaning that fans of the franchise shouldn’t expect anything amazing to come from this move.

Will you be happy to see the Terminator franchise left out in the cold?
