Suicide Squad is the movie everyone’s talking about – and it seems everyone is going to watch. Despite a tough time from critics – it seems fans of DC’s comic books haven’t been dissuaded from seeing the film; with takings reportedly reaching well into the movies expectations and on the cusp of toppling Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the king of August movies.
Box Office predictions put Suicide Squad between $147 – $150 million over the opening weekend. We already know that the movie made $20.5 million on Thursday night previews alone; suggesting fans just couldn’t wait to get into the cinema. With international totals already sitting at a very healthy $64.6 million – the film is already well on its way to making bank on its $175 million budget. It’s also very likely to topple Marvel’s record for opening weekend takings – which were set by Guardians of the Galaxy and sit at $94.3 million.
Reportedly a high turnout of female viewers has brought in the extra cash – something that didn’t happen when Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice hit cinemas earlier this year. That film brought in $166 million on its opening weekend – but slid heavily leading into its second week – audiences catching on that the film was a load of confused rubbish. All eyes are turning to the next week for Suicide Squad; will a similar mauling by critics put moviegoers off wanting to see the latest DC tent pole?
The movie currently sits on a 27% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes – yet is poling well with younger audiences. CinemaScore states that the under 18 demographic are rating the film as an A for the most-part; putting their opinions at odds with those of critics. Interestingly other movie studios opted against placing their franchises against DC’s tent pole movie – with only Nine Lives daring to take on the challenge.
