Patrick Stewart has made a big name for himself across a number of movies – the well travelled actor finding particular prominence within the X-Men franchise. His return in the upcoming Wolverine 3 movie particularly surprised given that it seemed the franchise had moved beyond his iteration of the character. Stewart seemingly notes this – saying that this movie will be the last time he takes up the iconic role of Professor Charles Xavier.
Talking with ITV, the well respected actor says that the forthcoming Wolverine film is likely the end of the road for him and the X-Men franchise. Telling the UK broadcaster;
“I would imagine this is probably the end of this franchise for me. But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over.”
The as-yet-untitled Wolverine film marks Stewart’s seventh outing as the character. He joins Hugh Jackman in leaving the franchise at the conclusion of this film. Both men have been apart of Fox’s film franchise since the outset – being apart of 2000’s X-Men ensemble movie. The franchise has endured varying degrees of success since then – enduring a reboot and subsequent creative changes.
Teasing fans further, he said that this iteration of the character would be very different to anything that had come before;
‘[A] very different Charles Xavier… nothing like the Charles Xavier you’ve seen in the past’.
Wolverine 3 is slated for a 2017 release. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with the latest news.
