George Miller has been very quiet about what he’s going to be doing next with the Mad Max franchise. After the huge success of Mad Max: Fury Road, there’s a huge demand for more from the franchise. Now it’s being reported that the next movie in the franchise will be a prequel to the hugely popular movie.
The Herald-Sun in Australia is reporting that George Miller has finally settled on the idea of a prequel to the Fury Road story, a shift in focus from the long rumoured sequel that he was apparently pondering. Neither Warner Bros or Miller have commented or confirmed the report.
The news outlet reports that filming on the next Mad Max film will take place in and around the Broken Hill area of Australia – and that production has been pencilled in for the end of 2016.
It’s also being suggested that the star of the previous movie – Tom Hardy – is set to reprise his role. It’ll be an interesting development given how awful a time the Hollywood star endured while filming the original Fury Road.
Finally – it’s being said that the movie will be called Mad Max: The Wasteland. The movie will reportedly focus on the background story to Charlize Theron’s Furiosa.
It’s all interesting for sure – but we’re not really convinced that the report had that much weight to it. The big problem is that Fury Road worked so well thanks to its blend of new and old – the movie wasn’t afraid to throw Max into the background so new characters could enjoy the spotlight. The idea of a prequel muddying the waters doesn’t leave us with positive thoughts – if only because it would potentially harm the story of Fury Road.
We’ll have to see if anything comes from this – and thus will pass on any info we hear.
