Ever determined to give fans more to look forward too, J.K. Rowling has delivered the latest Harry Potter story in the form of The Cursed Child – a transcript of the stage play of the same name. It opens up the next stage of Harry Potter’s story – and also brings with it the end of Harry’s adventure – at least according to J.K Rowling.
Rowling told Reuters at the show’s West End debut;
“He goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we’re done. This is the next generation, you know…. So, I’m thrilled to see it realised so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.”
It’s something of a kick in the teeth for fans who might have been hoping the success of this play might bring in a new age of Harry Potter stories. Rowling has been expanding her wizarding world in recent times; with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them set to kick the focus of the world to the US side of things. There’s so much world to explore that it seems silly to focus on one character.
To be fair though Rowling has said this before about the Potter stories. After the release of the Deathly Hallows she insisted that she was done with everyone’s favourite wizarding group – only for the writer to be tempted back to the writing room. Frankly we’d be amazed if this one didn’t end up as a full feature-film at some point in the future; something Daniel Radcliffe hasn’t entirely been against.
In the end we’ll just have to see what Rowling feels like doing yet. She’s the master of her domain and isn’t afraid to take it in weird and wonderful directions.
Harry Potter: The Cursed Child is out now in bookstores.
